About SASOGA

St Annes School Old Girls Association UK/Europe (‘SASOGA’) is an association of old girls of St Anne’s School Molete, Ibadan who are resident in the United Kingdom and Europe. We strongly believe in the rich lyrics of our school song and are doing our best to give back to the school that we love, building on the legacy of Anna Hinderer and her husband who introduced western education underpinned by Christian values to the Yorubaland in the 18th century.

We formally formed our alumni group in 2008 with 8 members and now we are proud to say that we have increased the membership to 140 and are encouraging others to join this exceptional group of women. We have no exclusion criteria as all old girls are welcomed.

We have our own constitution but work closely with the main old girls association, SSASOGA National, based in Ibadan in Nigeria. Together, in the words of our school song, ‘We too are building for good to hand unto those who come after us, treasures of beauty of thought and of skill’.

We are very passionate and proud of our heritage of Christian values that have produced generations of women who are true role models in society, and we aim to propagate the same.  As we sing in our school song “May none of us here fall behind”.

This is why we are so passionate about the education of the girl child and therefore through SASOGA, provide practical input, sponsorship and financial assistance to encourage and support a high standard of education for the girls in the school. The current students are involved in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition and we are pleased to say the girls have done us proud. We have contributed to better physical infrastructure at the school by refurbishing the old school hall, replacing and installing windows, and we are also contributing to improving the teaching skills of the teachers with the aim of improving the grades of the student at examinations.

On the wellbeing and social side, we keep in touch with one other to encourage and address the wellbeing of our Alumni.  This is achieved with the support of our chaplaincy, and the set representatives. The alumni year sets have representatives to foster improved communication and support for one other. We have held social events where alumni can come together, such as summer barbeques and a thanksgiving service to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the school, as well as remote events, for example, Christmas Carol services, and webinars on various current topics which are of relevance to our members.

SASOGA is a member of the Nigerian Schools Foundation (NSF), a community of Nigerian Alumni Associations in the UK which is doing work to improve standards of education in Nigeria and supports those in the diaspora. We participate in their activities, including education projects and relevant webinars, and networking with other schools at their social events.

SASOGA is supported financially by the voluntary contributions (levy) of its members through either monthly or annual subscriptions. This is a minimum of £5.00 per month or more.
